53rd RANZCO Scientific Congress

It was exciting to be back to the first in-person RANZCO annual scientific congress held since 2019, in Brisbane. This event is the main scientific meeting for ophthalmologists in Australian and New Zealand. It was fantastic to catch-up with colleagues and friends, and share news and stories from the last few years.

I presented in several symposia during the meeting including the “Expanding the Surgical Practice of the General Ophthalmologist – Surgical Correction of Refractive Error”, where I discussed the use of laser vision correction after cataract surgery to refine refractive outcomes. I was invited to speak in the  “Younger Fellows Symposium: a beginner’s guide to presbyopia correction”, where we had a fun debate about which intraocular lens type is the best: monofocal, extended depth of focus, or multifocal lenses. Of course, there is no correct answer to that one! There are pros and cons of each, and the choice of lens type should be tailored for each individual patient.

I was invited to speak in the Education Hub at lunchtime, discussing the topic “the role of extended depth of focus lenses in my daily practice”. So much of our world involves the intermediate space, ie mobile phones and tablet devices, so I utilise this lens often in practice, as it gives excellent unaided distance to intermediate range of vision.

I’m looking forward to RANZCO in 2023, which will be held in my hometown Perth!
